Filmmakers and mixed-media artists Chris, Kenny and Jason comprise the creative collective known as Shynola. The boys met at art college, bonding over a highly productive collaboration of films, painting, comics, poetry and music. After they organised a gallery show in London, archly named Shynola, the name stuck.
They have been directing consistently distinctive and award-winning work for over a decade. They have worked with Beck, Blur, Coldplay, Queens of the Stone Age, Tiesto, UNKLE and Radiohead, and created commercials for Honda, Delta, Nike, Sony, Orange, Nowness, Unilever, Beats and Lowe’s. Their title sequence work includes Chris Morris and Charlie Brooker’s Nathan Barley, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and cult favourite The IT Crowd.
They also created the eponymous Guide for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Shynola also ventured into dramatic filmmaking with Dr. Easy, a short produced by Warp Films and featuring Tom Hollander, with Oscar-nominated DoP Barry Ackroyd.
Recently, Shynola contributed to UFC’s Las Vegas Sphere interstitial by crafting CG sequences that celebrate Mexican culture through cosmic visuals. Using interstellar imagery, they combined Mexican heritage icons with UFC legends, creating scenes where Aztec warriors and famous fighters appear as statues made of cosmic dust. This piece enhanced UFC’s storytelling on the Sphere’s massive screen, adding a surreal, cultural layer to the visuals.
